Halloween is becoming more and more popular feast in Poland. Not so long ago, Halloween customs and traditions were completely unfamiliar for Polish people. However, pumpkin curving, ghosts or custumes has been gaining popularity over the years. What are the origins of this feast?
Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October; one day before All Saints' Day. Suprisingly, Halloween is neither a new celebration not it is originally American. It has been celebrated in Europe for hundreds of years before it comes to America. Contemporary version mixes Christian and Celtic traditions and is mostly associated with superstitions about ghosts and death. Its origins are not exactly confirmed but it is assumed that Halloween originates from Celtic celebration called Samhain observed on the teritory of contemporary Great Britain almost two thousand years ago. It was believed that on the 31st of October the dead are visiting the world of the living; therefore, people were organising special ceremony to greet good souls and exorcise evil one's. Similar customs related to that day were present in many other cultures in the world. For instance, Dziady is an ancient Slavic feast during which people were waiting for ghosts to come and celebrate with them.
Halloween came to the United States along with Irish imigrants in XIX century. Nowadays, American way of celebrating that day has become also popular in Poland and is widely regarded as a rather commercial feast.
Halloween has a completely different atmosphere in comparison to our traditional All-Saint's Day. The Former is celebrated in positive mood, whereas the Latter is rather a time for reflecsion on those who are not with us anymore. Until recently, it was hard to imagine spending the turn of October and Novemeber in a warm and convivial atmosphere. Luckily, because of the popularisation of Hallowen in Poland, it is possible now.
